The mechanics option is designed for those students wishing to delve more deeply into the concepts of force, rotational and translational motion, static equilibrium and vectors. This option will involve some extra reading, a collaborative group project, and exercises based on these readings that will involve some simple computations. The 2 quizes will check how well you have understood these topics. By choosing to do this option you will get up to 10% extra credit towards each of the 3 exams. E.g. if your mechanics option mark is 75% you will have 7.5% added to each of your 3 exam scores.
Reading Assignment
Parts of the following chapters in Hewitts, Conceptual Physics will be used in this option
  • 2. Linear motion
  • 3. Nonlinear motion
  • 4. Newton's Laws of motion
  • 6. Energy
  • 7. Rotational motion
Group Project
  • Groups of 3 or 4 will work on obtaining examples from the WWW demonstrating the subject matter found in the chapters 2,3,4,6,7. The groups will form home pages from a template that will be provided. Each member of the group will be expected to obtain one link for each of the 5 topics. They should provide a short description of the link that they find. The link and description will be inserted into the correct position of the template.

Grading
The grades for the Mechanics Option will assigned in the following manner
Mechanics Option Quizes
70%
Grade from group members
5%
Grade from instructor for group work
25%
